Fastline donate engine parts for Matisa

9 April 2005 - thanks to Ben Williams for this article

Some excellent news over the last few weeks regarding the missing engine parts for the Matisa.

We have managed to source and retrieve nearly all the parts we need for the Rolls Royce engine and also some of the transmission. The mechanical side of things on this machine is now looking much better and now that we have the parts Mark and Dave will be fitting them during the next few work parties. All of the items were kindly donated by FastLine (formerly Jarvis) via one of our contacts - so a very big thank you must go out to him and of course the management at FastLine for agreeing to donate the parts to us.

The following is a list of the parts that we have received from York OTMD:

  • Starter motor
  • Alternator and bracket
  • Fuel injection pump
  • Injectors
  • All associated pipe work and Banjo’s
  • Plasser & Theurer air compressor
  • Air filter housing, and turbo inlet pipe
  • Tacho drive and three-phase generator
  • Energise to run (stop) solenoid
  • Williams air control valve
  • Williams air control lever
  • Excess fuel solenoid
  • Throttle solenoid (Start Assist)
  • Small prop shaft
  • Red train line angle cock and pipe

We are truly grateful for all of the above - it will obviously be a big help in getting this engine back to an operational state again.

Mark went to York on Friday 25th March to collect the first batch of parts, and then Mark and Ben went to York again on Saturday 2nd April to collect the second batch.

We are now looking into the transmission on this machine as the engine will hopefully soon be fit to run again. By looking at the various machines stored at York OTMD we have discovered that the transmission system fitted to the Matisa might have had a transfer unit with directional control. The original set-up would have been a differential with the input from the gearbox at the top and two outputs to the drive axles at the bottom. Our contact is currently looking into getting hold of a differential for us, but the first thing we’ll need to do is check that it will fit in the Matisa! Mark will be taking some photos of the chassis on the next visit to the CVR which will then be forwarded to our contact at FastLine.
